I love the holidays, but to be honest, I am a warm weather person. Although I love the thought of snow, but in reality, it is really cold. We spent the holidays in Colorado and I had a great first half of the week. The second half included a visit from the stomach flu...argh. Here is the recap:
- We left for Colorado on the Saturday before Christmas. A huge snowstorm was coming through Kansas and my dad decides this is the best time to leave. So, we were driving in a caravan of three cars. Now, I should preface this with saying I was the one who would always watch "Little House on the Prairie" where Pa had to tie a rope around him to go to the barn in a blizzard so he could fine his way back and I would be cracking up thinking, when does it ever get that bad. Well, it did on our drive. There were times when we could literally not see any pavement. It was SCARY - but of course, there are no towns out in western Kansas - so we kept going. A ten hour drive turned into a 14.5 hour drive.
- We made it safely and my sister and her family made it in late Sunday night.
- Monday morning my dad, sister, brother-in-law, husband and I headed to ski a half day at Wolfcreek - the lines were out of control for renting equipment - but we did finally get on the slopes around 2 and made it to closing.
- Tuesday - we spent the whole day out there and IT WAS COLD - I mean in the teens cold and snowing. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the face going down the run and then sitting on the lift left you frozen by the time you exited. Lori and I were so, so, so cold - but it was still fun. The really bad part was that we were looking forward to eating lunch to get warm....alas everyone else had that idea, so we had to eat outside which didn't really accomplish our goal of warmth. The funny story of that day was that my brother-in-law Andy, who has NO fear, broke his ski that day. Yep, he went over a jump - landed on the back of his skis, then on his back, and managed to break a ski - something Kent and I had never seen done - impressive!!
- Stacy came in on Thursday and she and Kent were the only ones brave enough to venture out to Wolfcreek on Friday - the temperature then was in the single digits - but they did it!
Overall, I had a great time! But now, I am pulling down Christmas decorations and I have to admit that Jan-Feb is hard for me because I am really already over the cold weather. On the up side, we get to have plenty of soups and hot cups of tea though!
Joel is growing up way too fast. His new favorite song is "Zaccheus" - he loves to tell him to come down from there. He says it very sternly though - I wonder where you would hear that tone of voice? He also loves to sing the books of the Bible (both Old and New Testament). We laugh though when I ask him what the New Testament starts with - for some reason he always forgets Matthew and goes straight to Third John - he is obsessed with Third John - I will say "It starts with Matthew" and he says "and third John too" - John has a fan in my son!
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!
